If Not Stone, Then What?

2 min read

I really do love making new things with my own hands. Genuinely new things: not out of Pinterest, not like everyone else’s, but with soul and a piece of myself in them.

When there are so many ideas, shapes and states inside you, experiment becomes the only honest way to bring anything into the world. That is exactly how it appeared — my new art object.

Functional decor as a form of freedom

Functional decor is my weakness.

It is decor that will live with you and become a genuinely living part of a space. When an object’s role is not limited to looking nice.

People already make things like this, and make them well. What is more, it sells beautifully on the art and decor market. The format I was working in goes by several names:

Rock, Stone, Stone table, coffee table as an object.

Call it what you like — it comes to the same thing: a table that looks like stone but is not stone.

About the materials (and a little magic)

I deliberately went towards lightweight materials.

First, because I love freedom.

Second, because I was running an experiment.

Everything already lying around went into it.

Extruded foam board, for instance — small offcuts left over from packing paintings

(I adore it when leftovers become a beginning)

I glued the shape together and then… covered it in expanding foam. At that moment, I admit, I felt like a sculptor — with my hands, my body, my sense of volume, without any grandeur about it.

It is a wonderful feeling when a tangible form is born out of pure intuition.

Texture is my favourite part

Then comes the best bit.

For the stone surface I use, as always, decorative materials by Eskaro.

“Accent” by Eskaro: my thoughts on why ready-made solutions have become the world’s new language

Of interest to anyone who cares about transforming the space around them aesthetically.

This time I used:

Travertin

Pasta

They give you that depth, that unevenness and the sense of the “real”, when you want to touch it and cannot believe it is not stone.

Once it had dried, there was the painting. I did that part very calmly and finely, with respect for the form.

And… voilà.

Shall we talk about art?

Ask me about any part of what I do — what a work is made of, how it feels to the hand, how it will sit in your room. I am glad to film it for you in the studio. We can talk through size, framing and timing, or start a work that does not exist yet.
