Three colours. Black, white and gold, and no fourth.

Sky and sea are nearly monochrome; the whole difference between them sits in how the surface catches light.

The silhouette of a city on the horizon. A mirage, possibly: it comes out and disappears again, calls and gives no address.

The gold on the ships is alive. In daylight it shifts, by evening it goes out, so in the morning the painting is calm, at noon sharp, at night quiet, and you did nothing to it.

There are several ships and they run close together. None falls behind, none breaks away.

Where are they sailing? I do not know. There is no shore here.

It stands well in a sitting room opposite a window, where the change of light shows most.
