These mountains behave like a wave. Crest, drop, another crest, all of it in light, nearly transparent tones, so the massif looks afloat rather than standing.

“The Wave of Mountains”, 110 × 90 cm, mixed media on canvas.

Photographic likeness was not the point. I needed movement: the heavy going light, the motionless starting to flow.

The texture went on dense, by hand.

From across the room it is air. Close up it is stone. The distance between those two impressions is the work.

Light tones give the kind of quiet you get in the first minutes of dawn, when the world has not switched on and nobody wants anything from you.

The wave in the title is a form and a rhythm at once.

Mountain painting art like this stands well in a living room with wood, stone and glass. In a dark interior it disappears.

A mountain looks eternal and fixed. Does it breathe? It does, only slower than we do.

Shall we talk about art?

Ask me about any part of what I do — what a work is made of, how it feels to the hand, how it will sit in your room. I am glad to film it for you in the studio. We can talk through size, framing and timing, or start a work that does not exist yet.
