How to Keep Paintings As They Were

Seven recommendations on what you can and should do to look after my paintings:

1. Dust your paintings regularly: use a soft, dry cloth to remove dust. This stops dirt building up and helps the painting stay fresh for longer.

2. Keep paintings somewhere dry and cool: works with epoxy resin resist moisture, but that does not mean a painting should hang in a damp room. The best microclimate is a moderate temperature and low humidity.

3. Protect the painting from direct sunlight: ultraviolet can fade the colours over time (not at once, but gradually), even though the resin stands up to outside influences. Try to hang the painting where it will not sit in constant direct sun.

4. Use a frame or glass for protection: if the painting is not framed, glass is recommended (few of my works are like that, but still) to minimise the risk of mechanical damage or dirt.

5. Keep paintings away from sources of heat: constant contact with high temperatures can affect the structure of the resin. Place paintings well away from fireplaces, radiators and other heat sources. This matters for any painting! And for all of them, really.

6. If you need to, wipe the painting gently with a damp cloth: if there are marks, a slightly damp cloth can be used.

7. Get the lighting right: for paintings with epoxy resin, soft light sources are ideal — lamps with low UV output. That will keep the colours bright and saturated without any risk of damage.

Follow these recommendations and the paintings will keep their beauty and their condition for a long time to come.

Shall we talk about art?

Ask me about any part of what I do — what a work is made of, how it feels to the hand, how it will sit in your room. I am glad to film it for you in the studio. We can talk through size, framing and timing, or start a work that does not exist yet.
