Self Focus

“Self Focus”, 137 × 37 cm, a narrow vertical. Silver moulding, gloss, many layers, from the “Sea” collection.

The vertical is not decoration. It pulls your eye downward after him, the way a well does.

The blue is glossy. It is the colour of water on a clear day and the silence a person starts hearing themselves in.

He is not drowning. He is making contact with himself.

The dive goes into no sea and no swimming pool. It goes into himself, and a person makes that first descent at about five, then repeats it all their life with varying success.

Does he need a guide down there? No. That is the whole title.

For me water is the space of feeling and memory. Here it is also a depth with no floor shown.

A narrow vertical wants a pier of wall: bedroom, study, staircase.

Commission it in another height if your wall asks for that.
