Spilled Space

Black and silver, waves. “Spilled Space”, 125 × 46 cm on plastic, silver and aluminium framing, part of “Fish in Space”.

The format is long and narrow. Because of it the waves read as a ribbon with no beginning and no end in sight.

A person's shadow stands on the shore. The person is missing. Only the shadow.

It is long and thin, laid across the sand, and it says they have stood there a while with no plans to move.

The waves are water and universe at once. I never separated them: a person meets both the same way, standing at the edge and not deciding to go in.

The moment is specific. Somebody on the border between the shore they know and the depth they do not know at all.

Will they go in? The painting does not say. Their business.

Silver on black works in side light. Hang it under a direct lamp and half the relief disappears.

A narrow horizontal is good in a hallway, or over a long chest of drawers in the living room.
