“Insight” is a dark sky filling the canvas, the arc of a planet at the bottom, and two people sitting on that arc. Holding each other, the size of a fingernail, in silver.

From the “Fish in Space” collection, 130 × 90 cm on canvas, four centimetres thick. Many layers, coarse relief, gloss on part of the surface.

I built the sky in a bubbled texture: thousands of small craters, with blue and green flashes of stars between them. The planet below is smooth and matte, with a gold glow along its rim.

Four centimetres of thickness throw a shadow on the wall. The work hangs and holds itself in the air, apart from the wall, which matters for a dark canvas.

Insight comes out of the quiet around you, not out of your head. The two are sitting on the edge, saying nothing. The sky above them has already done the thinking.

Hang it over a sofa, in a bedroom, near a window. Side light from a window is where the texture works best.

People do not spot the pair in the dark at once. That is the idea.
