The Breath of Space and Us

At first glance a sea shore with dark waves. Look again: it is space.

A white stream runs through the middle. It is built of swirls and spray and takes everything it can reach.

Down at the bottom, if you go looking, there are two shadows. Human. Minute.

The people themselves barely read. Only the shadows on the shore speak for them.

I spent a long time deciding whether to keep them. Without them the picture was space. With them it became us.

The dark masses at the sides I held nearly black, so the white stream would read as the one living place on the canvas and hold your eye there.

The border between sky and water is rubbed out deliberately. A wave and a galaxy are built alike.

Two people stand and look. What are they asking themselves? I know, and I am not putting it in the caption.

It wants a big dark wall: living room, hall, study.
