Spilled Space

Horizontal waves of black and white run across the whole canvas. It reads as surf seen from above and as mountain ridges in fog, and both readings are right.

The crests are white and raised, the troughs black and matte. Between them lies a grey grit that glitters in the light.

One gold patch at the top. One in the whole work. Without it the waves would pull the eye down and not let it go.

I poured the mass and tilted the canvas until it settled into bands. You set the direction; the pattern inside a band makes itself.

Black and white textured wall art has the advantage of not setting a colour for the room. It goes against an olive wall, a grey one, a beige one, against wood.

Hang it in a living room over the sofa, in a study, in a dining room. Side light is better: from above the crests lose their shadow and the work goes flat.
