The Path of Light

“The Path of Light”, mixed media, built in relief. I did not paint the wave, I built it up in mass: it stands proud of the surface, and along the crest the gold lies thicker than in the troughs.

The black ground is matte and dead; the gold is glossy. Lamplight runs along the crest and leaves the moment you take a step sideways.

I took the shape of the wave from water, but people read it differently. Some see a river. Some a road, some a horizon.

The diameter is modest, so it hangs in a hallway, over a console, in a dark living room on a pale wall.

There are three “Path of Light” bowls to go with it, carrying the same gold wave on the side, 20, 15 and 10 cm. Stand them under the painting and the corner comes together as a whole, one of those cases where the set is stronger than any single piece.

Black with gold lives happily with wood and with stone.
