The Free Luck

Two horses' heads take up almost the whole canvas, one black, one white.

“The Free Luck”, a 130 × 130 cm square, mixed media, gloss in places.

They stand close together, so near the front edge that you look at them point-blank.

I built this as a portrait: large, face to face, no landscape and no story. The square is deliberate too. It stops the eye running off sideways.

Black and white are not arguing. Day and night. Shadow and light. Both in place.

A horse walks. It asks no permission, explains nothing, does not look back. Luck runs the same way: it comes to those already moving and passes the ones waiting for the rules and a guarantee.

The gloss reads stronger on the black head than on the white, which brings the black one closer.

Both look straight at you, and wherever you stand in the room they go on looking exactly there.
