The Stream of Clarity

A storm sky, columns of light breaking through the clouds, and in that light a black horse walking through water.

I built the clouds in texture, heavy, grey-black. I ran the light in straight bands from top to bottom, carefully, because a slanting beam looks more striking and only the straight one is true.

Behind the horse, in the gap, lies gold. It is the only warm patch and it works as the horizon.

The water is shallow. The horse is walking ankle-deep, and the reflection under it is broken by ripples. The step is calm, in no hurry.

Clarity comes after the storm, not instead of it. Everything dark on this canvas stayed where it was; it simply broke open in one place.

Art for a living room, on a dark blue or graphite wall: against those the gold in the gap comes forward. I have seen it on green too, and it works.
