When Do You Need a Painting?

2 min read

Visual art is among the oldest things on Earth. By capturing the world around them on all kinds of surfaces with all kinds of materials, people learn something new, let go of stress and share how they see reality with others.

This channel has covered paintings of every shape, size, style and meaning, how to frame them and how to fit them into an interior. But here is a question: when do you actually need a painting?

When you want the place to feel like home

The most obvious job a painting does, and has done for centuries, is to decorate an interior. Let us look at why.

Beautiful.

A thousand styles, subjects and colour schemes to choose from — that is what paintings offer.

Practical.

A painting is not stucco or a mural. You can take it down easily, move it to another wall, play with the arrangement however you like.

Because a work of art can be almost anything you want it to be, you can literally build the reality around you. We all know that people read colours differently, as a spectrum of moods and emotions. Do you want a bold red as an accent in the room? Or a calming green? Anything is possible.

Unique

A painting is at the very least a unique work of art, and at most a luxury. No two are alike. Just imagine: at home you have a small painted world into which an artist poured all their skill and soul. It is spellbinding.

When you want some joy

Bare walls can leave some people melancholy. A painting fills the empty space and changes the character of a room, making it complete and comfortable. Time spent in a well-furnished home is far better, isn’t it?

Joy can come from the subject too. You could commission a portrait of someone close, so that looking at it warms you. You could hang a landscape of a place tied to happy memories. Or put up your own work and admire it, praising yourself for the creativity.

When you want to express yourself

Things made by hand are art as well. You can paint a picture yourself or take a course. MAKE AIR School, for instance, will help you create a photorealistic image in a few days. And at my own Art Therapy sessions you will get to know texture and take home a whole microcosm.

Things you make with your hands lift your self-esteem and stand as a reminder of your inner strength. Isn’t that a small miracle?

When you want to show love

There is a reason gifts count as one of the main love languages. But what to give? It often leaves people stumped. What if the person already has everything? What if you miss the mark and disappoint them?

In that case a painting is ideal. Working out what someone is drawn to aesthetically is not that hard — it shows in how they look, in the style of their interior and in a hundred small things. And if you simply ask whether they like sea waves, a landscape wrapped in fog or a pair of horses, they are unlikely to guess what surprise is waiting for them.

Shall we talk about art?

Ask me about any part of what I do — what a work is made of, how it feels to the hand, how it will sit in your room. I am glad to film it for you in the studio. We can talk through size, framing and timing, or start a work that does not exist yet.
