The Abyss of Lightness

A small girl dancing among the stars. “The Abyss of Lightness”, a square metre of canvas, layered, glossy in parts.

Her T-shirt says “it's ok”. I left the English as it is: in Russian the phrase lands heavier than it should.

The space around her is dark and huge. She is not lost in it and not frightened, she has something to do.

The dance came out about trust. In herself, in the world, in whatever the moment happens to be.

The laws are plainly broken. A child cannot dance in a vacuum, and that suits me entirely.

The abyss in the title is not frightening. It is simply a great deal of room, and there is enough of it for anybody's dance.

Her figure is small and she fills the whole dark space, and I still do not fully understand how that happened.

The line on the shirt works as a mantra. Everything is fine, even when nothing around is clear and nobody guarantees a thing.

Hang it where a child sleeps, or in a corridor that needs lifting.
