We are looking down at an aeroplane. Not up from the ground, from above its own altitude.
“In Flight”, 130 × 80 cm, off canvas. Layered work, gloss, from the collection of the same name.
The earth is far below and I left it blurred. It has stopped holding anything.
Clouds lie beside the plane, at its level. A thin trail stretches behind.
The trail is the point. It means the movement happened, that somebody once decided to step outside the usual, and the line in the air confirmed it.
The viewpoint kills the familiar perspective: earth, plane and clouds sit almost in one plane, and your eye has to work out again which way is up.
The plane has left the ground and has not dissolved into the sky.
Gloss runs along the trail and over the tops of the clouds. In daylight the trail lights up.
Does anyone look back from up there? No.
It usually goes into an office, sometimes into a hallway, right over the door.
Bought directly from the artist, with my studio standing behind it.
