Life is a Luxury

A square a metre and a half each way, all sand and grey. Sky in fog, bands of water and land beneath it, and a few white birds in the air.

“Life is a Luxury”, 150 × 150 cm on canvas, mixed media, gloss in places.

I gave it no horizon. The bands follow one another and dissolve, so the eye has nothing to catch on and goes round the work in circles.

There is almost no colour: white, grey, ochre, a little gold dust along the top. The birds are two strokes of white lead.

The luxury in the title is not about gold. It is about a morning with nowhere to be. About a shore with nobody on it.

Large wall art in this format needs a square wall and distance: look at it from four or five paces.

Living room, bedroom, hall. Over a console with a lamp it pulls the whole wall together.

One of the most expensive works in the catalogue. Quiet to the last degree, and that is exactly what it gets bought for.
