The Grace of Madness

Two toddlers running after each other straight through the waves. Neither catching nor escaping: the running is the point.

The ground is textured, sea and sky merged in it. The palette is emerald green, wet, alive.

I worked the colour to read as an environment, not a backdrop. In an environment like that you want to move, and the figures in it never stand still.

You can almost hear the shrieking. High, breathless, the kind that loosens something in you.

The madness in the title has no chaos in it. The grace is bodily and instinctive: children move precisely even while running through water for no reason at all.

A small format works for intimacy. The scene reads as your own accidentally surviving frame.

Joy has no duty to be tidy. Happiness can be wet, loud and slightly deranged.

It hangs by a bed or over a child's desk.
