Light of Good Buddha

A face in limestone rock, in bas-relief. The lids are lowered, the lips closed, the features large and soft, and the whole surface is grey-gold and rough.

“Light of Good Buddha”, 90 × 80 cm, on a base that is not canvas, mixed texture technique, finished in bronze with hangers.

The face does not stand forward; it lies in the same plane as the ground. I did not model it on top, I took it out from inside the mass, so it has no outline: the cheek turns into stone and you cannot find the point where it happens.

Gold breaks through in patches at the temples and along the nose; the rest is grey.

This one works at a distance. From two metres the face gathers into a whole. From half a metre it falls apart into cracks and swellings.

Hang it in a dining room over the table, in a living room on a blank wall, in a room kept for practice. The bronze hangers mean it can go on a chain, with no frame around the edge.

A quiet piece of art for interiors, for a room where you want silence.
